Obituary for Victoria M. "Vickie" McCabe (Scarselletti)

Victoria M. McCabe (nee Scarselletti), known to all her friends and acquaintances as Vickie, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Sunrise Senior Living in Smithtown, NY.
She was born on February 8th, 1924 to Antonio and Annamaria Scarselletti in Manayunk, PA. She attended grammar school at Holy Family, went on to Hallahan High School, graduating in 1941, and then entered nursing school at Misercordia Hospital in Philadelphia.
Vickie proudly served her country during WWII as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corp. While stationed in Korea, she met and became engaged to her future husband, the late Joseph V. McCabe, Jr. They married on October 26, 1946 at the Villanova University chapel in Villanova, PA, and moved to Jamaica, Queens before settling in Garden City, NY to raise their family.
Aside from participation in many volunteer and church-organizations for St. Joseph’s Parish in Garden City and the Cherry Valley Country Club, Vickie was interested in writing and took courses at Adelphi University. She also decided to teach herself about the stock market and investments and founded “The Garden Associates”, a small group of housewives from the area who began making their own investments. Once most of the children were in high school and college, Vickie returned to her nursing career as a well-known Emergency Room nurse at Nassau Hospital in Mineola, NY.
During a brief second marriage, Vickie lived in Tokyo, Japan. She fully embraced the culture and brought her love of singing to that part of the world, as the founding member of the Tokyo Chorus of the International Sweet Adelines organization, a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony. She returned to the US in 1979 and lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for the next 31 years. She loved her eclectic neighborhood, where she was active in her local parish, St Gregory the Great. She also resumed her nursing career, first as a health assistant for advertising firms on Madison Avenue and then as a volunteer Red Cross Nurse, where she served valiantly in Florida during Hurricane Andrew in 1992, in Oklahoma City after the terrorist bombing in 1995, and assisted in the aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001.
Vickie had a life-long passion for traveling, culminating in a trip to Antarctica when she was 75 years old! She also loved playing contract bridge, golfing, and organizing events (parish, school, hospital, alumni associations, neighborhood and community).
For the last three years of her life, Vickie was a resident at the Sunrise Senior Living in Smithtown, NY. She loved to lead her fellow residents in song, especially songs from the Big Band era and Patriotic songs. Vickie was also known for her beautiful red hair and sparkling blue eyes – a unique combination for a very unique woman!
Vickie McCabe is survived by her six children: Michael A. (and Paula) McCabe, Rev. Joseph V. McCabe, M.M., Dee Dee McCabe (and Sue Basso), Paul (and Susan) McCabe, Barbara (and Dr. Carl) Mills, and Caren McCabe; and 6 grandchildren (Julie, Katy, Carl, PJ, Bryan and Meg).
A Mass for Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, 120 5th St, Garden City (NY) on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. Friends may pay their respects in Church beginning at 10:30 A.M. In addition, a reception will be held afterwards. Interment at Pinelawn National Cemetery will take place on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Vickie’s memory to Good Shepherd Hospice, a member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island (www.goodshepherdhospice.chsli.org), Franciscan Friars of the Atonement (www.atonementfriars.org), or Discalced Carmelite Nuns (89 Hiddenbrooke Dr, Beacon, NY 12508).
